Melodies, that move millions and excite the senses: the famous and beloved opera choir make the program of this years ArenaOuvertüre. The Jenaer Philharmonic and the Philharmonic Choir Jena sing and play music from opera's such as 'Tannhäuser' and 'Lohengrin' from Richard Wagner, of George Bizets 'Carmen' and Pietro Mascagnis 'Cavalleria risticana' and from well-known Verdi opera's. In the meantime the orchestra plays the sounds of different overtures, saturating the arena.

Gotham City lays in dust and ashes. The few survivors that crawl out the rubble want to rebuild their city. However there is a wind blowing through that threatens to tear the city in two: Blakey the Ape, a former lab animal. Now Harry Myers the destroyer of Gotham City can save the city. With the debut performance of this racy and crazy musicals, the ensemble bids adieu to the current artistic management of the Theaterhause Jena.

The electronics were done away with recently, however in their place now stand the soulful nu-jazz rhythms in brand-new acoustic garments.

Every tenor and soprano saxophonist today stands in the long shadow of the great John Coltrane. For Ravi Coltrane (whose name is in honor of the sitar player Ravi Shankar) the shadow is especially long considering that he is the son of the genius who passed away in 1967. The musician however is not one for plagiarism, but instead reworks his heritage to an independent, personal style with humor and playfulness.

In 2003, Wir Sind Helden with their first album “Reklamation“ imprinted a new, jagged German-electro pop and released a wave of fresh German-language music. Two albums and a three-year sabbatical later, they are back with “Bring mich nach Hause“. The lyrics and the laconic, intelligent handling of the words paint the picture of a band around Judith Holofernes. The instrumentation has changed, the eminently danceable and melodic flavour remains the same.

And then too the Englishman Steve Rawlings who on the island already has a cult following. Thanks to his German-English gibberish he catches the audience.

With “UFO“ in 2010 they established a reputation. The songs of the very young musicians from Hamburg have their own coherence and are reduced to the basics. Which is characteristic for krautrock as well as post punk.
